A Brief Introduction to Nepal

Nepal is very beautiful and rich country although it is small in shape and size; beautiful in the sense that it is endowed by nature with a wide range of flora and fauna, massive Himalaya region, rivers, jungles and terai (low land); and rich in the sense that it has various natural recourses, cultural heritage, ancient traditions, fascinating festivals, unique art and architecture and ever smiling Nepalese people.

Historically, Nepal was divided into 24 small kingdoms and King Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered all these small kingdoms and unified into one kingdom in 1768. For about 240 years Shah Dynasty ruled Nepal and it remained kingdom. From 2006 with people’s power Nepal turned into a federal democratic republic.

Being small in shape and size also Nepal has multi-culture, multi-language and multi religion. Nepal has a population of 24 million people, who speak 70 different languages and belong to more than 40 different ethnic groups. Nepal has a diverse landscape, ranging from the humid Terai plains mere 70m above sea level in the south to the mountainous Himalayas 8,848m above sea level, the world's highest point – the summit of Mount Everest in the north.

Nepal’s capital is Kathmandu and it is the largest city in the country.  Nepali is the official language in Nepal. The state currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NRs).
